Crew was shot down on 7/26/1943 on mission to Hanover, Germany. The B-17F, 42-5893 “Sad Sack” went down near Hanover and all crew members became POWs. It was during the forced POW march that Sergeant Cothran was shot by German solidiers as he attempted to escape. He was buried in a mass grave near Stein, Austria. Later his body was moved to the Evergreen Cemetary in Paris, Texas.
