"Baker was highly commended for his development of a chrome steel taper for use in packing parachutes. The taper is made from a cylinder rod out of the engine of a B17 and one of the closing rings from a parachute. The two are welded together and eliminate the closing rings, which saves many minutes in packing a parachute. (From 8th Air Force news release reprinted in The Fresno Bee on March 17, 1945.
